Installations
Grotesque Art and Cabinets of Curiosities trade on fascination with the unfamiliar, the unusual and the unnatural. In this installation I re-cast the grotesque to signify cultural attitudes over the centuries that have articulated the relationship between monstrosity and same-sex desire. In conversation with the Wall of Grotesques is a Cabinet of Curiosities. Collectors of the traditional cabinets endeavored to create order in a chaotic world. This cabinet enacts a revisionist history by framing and containing artifacts of queer life together with the mundane. Also included in the installation are the Bachmann Overdrive Reparative Conversion-a-tor, 2010 Model and the Altar/Collapsible Reading Table. The second installation heroizes the butch - who was central to gay culture in the 1940s & 1950s.
